A loan helped a home baker open the cafe of her dreams!

Esperanza's story

Hello! I am Esperanza, owner and founder of Con Amor Home Bakery. I was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa. I am a proud Mexican/American, I always carry Mexico in my heart and in all I do. Since I was a little girl, I always loved to learn and try new things. I learned to dance by watching music videos, I loved to read, play dress up, and sing. One thing that I remember the most was the cookbook one of my sisters gifted me around the age of 10. It was a children's cookbook, and from that book I learned how to make scrambled eggs, pancakes, spaghetti, and even homemade pizza. I loved that book so much, it even had me creating my own recipes.

Around that same time, my mom had recently taken a cake and pastry class in Mexico. I loved to watch her bake and everyone loved her creations. She become well known in our town for her famous tres leches cake. To this day, they still say hers is the best. She has now passed that recipe on to me.

As I grew older and joined the workforce, I was a bit at a loss. I wasn’t the most academically inclined person, but I also knew working job to job was not for me. In 2020, when covid hit and I had all the time in the world, I would bake and cook everything I possibly could. It took me back to when I was a 10 year old with my cookbook, it made me happy. That is when I decided to open up my business, Con Amor Home Bakery. “Con Amor” translates to “With Love” in English. The name speaks for itself. Everything I do, I do it with love.
