A loan helped to support a specialty coffee cooperative improve the livelihoods of more than 400 coffee farmers with organic and gender practices.

Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Alta Montaña's story

Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Alta Montaña sources organic coffee from over 400 small-holder farmers in the Rodriguez de Mendoza province of Amazonas, Peru. Close to 30% of these farmers are women. It pays its members fair prices, helping their members cover essential needs for their families, and supporting them to use sustainable farming practices that protect the forest.

Cooperativa Alta Montaña is frequently monitoring the quality of coffee crops and conducts training sessions on sustainable agriculture and organic methods. It also provides its members with training to use equipment such as solar dryers and fermentation tanks on their farms. This enables them to produce value-added specialty coffee and secure over 40% higher incomes than informal markets or intermediaries.

The cooperative works closely with local farmers to preserve the primary forest in protected areas. One way it does this is by planting trees between the standing forest and land used for farming. In addition to preventing deforestation and increasing local biodiversity, these natural barriers provide cover for coffee crops and help their farms to become climate resilient.

Your loan will allow Alta Montaña to improve its gender practices by promoting the work of women within the cooperative. It will also support the cooperative to develop new business lines to provide local women with additional sources of income. Your loan will be repaid through the sale of specialty, deforestation-free coffee to national and international clients.

This loan is special because:

It supports businesses that are too big for microfinance but too small for banks.
