A loan helped a member to buy a slushie machine and a taco cart.

La Bendicion De Los Encuentros Group's story

Low family income is an economic factor with a strong impact on families, and hinders access to basic services such as education, health, and housing. This is the case with Rafaela (age 34) who has no formal education. She is married to a laborer and they are the parents of four children (ages 3 to 18). Two of the children are in 8th and 9th grades. The eldest child completed 9th grade.

Four years ago, Rafaela began to sell snacks and fruit smoothies in a sales space in front of her house. Also she raises pigs and sells them to obtain other income. Thanks to the support of her two older daughters, she manages the businesses efficiently.

Rafaela requests her first Kiva loan to buy a slushie machine and a cart to prepare Mexican tacos. There is no doubt that offering variety in the business will attract more customers and increase her income.

Seven Spanish-speaking women comprise the communal bank “La Bendición De Los Encuentros” of Puente de Amistad [Friendship Bridge]. Rafaela participates as the president. They live in the department / state of San Marcos. They sell firewood and corn tortillas, and raise animals. They participate in the "Microcrédito Plus” program that combines loans, training, and health. A recent training focused on good business administration and entrepreneurship. Other topics include health, family matters, and women's issues.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a hand of development for women!
