A loan helped to invest in supplies for her hammock weaving business.

Loo's story

Loo is originally from a small village in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Having never had the opportunity for an education, her work options were extremely limited and her life was entirely dependent on slash and burn agriculture.

Her children are all married now and her hope is to get her hammock business off the ground to create a steady income for herself.

Rural communities, like where Loo is from, struggle with limited job opportunities, fluctuating crop prices and educational disparities. Previously, Loo worked as a labourer in slash-and-burn agriculture, facing the challenges of farming in hazardous conditions.

However, Loo's life took a transformative turn when she embraced artisan hammock weaving as a full-time occupation. This shift significantly enhanced her quality of life and provided a crucial boost to her household income. Weaving hammocks allowed Loo to work comfortably from home while securing a more sustainable source of income.

With the support of a Kiva loan, Loo sees an opportunity to further strengthen her hammock weaving business. This loan will enable her to ensure a steady supply of materials, sustaining her weaving activities throughout the year and empowering her to continue improving her economic prospects.

This loan is special because:

It creates employment opportunities for vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas.
