A loan helped a locally-owned fitness business acquire equipment to begin a youth centered fitness center.

Meshan's story

Growing up I always loved fitness. From lifting weights to walking across town to play basketball at the community center, being active has always been such a positive outlet for me. I grew up in foster care from two years old to eight years old until I was adopted by my foster parents due to the passing of my mother. I have five biological siblings, three adopted siblings, and three parents. I was fortunate to have a lot of role models in my family and local community. My role models around fitness were my dad, brothers and cousin as we were always challenging each other to do and be better at different sports.

During my younger years I struggled a lot with anger and frustration, but always found peace through being active. My biological mom struggled financially so we would often get gifts donated, but finding things to do outside seemed limitless.

As I got older, I still struggled with anger, but also dealt with a lot of anxiety and depression which got more debilitating with age. It affected so many areas of my life that it felt like the only remedy would be reliant on medication for the rest of my life. Eventually I felt that I needed to fully understand the extent to my mental health barriers so I became a mental health therapist. Even after becoming a therapist, I realized that I wanted to have an alternative to offer my clients in addition to a diagnosis and medication. As a skill developer, it became increasingly clear that while medication is a major part of healing, proper diet and exercise play critical roles in the healing journey as well. I wanted to teach people that they can have both and that they often compliment each other for a more holistic outcome.
