A loan helped to buy farm inputs.

Watson's story

Watson is a young farmer, age 31, married to a supportive wife. They are blessed with 2 beautiful children. He practices maize farming and owns a hardware shop to support himself with other basic needs on day to day basis. Inaddition to that the hardware shop also helps him to sort out bills for labourers during farming activities and he has 3 years’ experience in farming.

He believes that maize farming is one of the serious businesses in Malawi and profitable because every household cannot go a day without looking for maize flour to prepare food for the family.

Watson's business is being challenged by lack of financial inclusion for the youths to have access to finance and farm inputs (fertilizer and seeds) to increase crop production and yield.

He joined the FIFAD programme to have access to finance and farm inputs. He believes that he will benefit from with FIFAD because the loan will help him to harvest more after applying enough fertilizer to the crops.

In addition to that, the loan will help him have more maize for business, since 2024 is a year of potential businesses only for those who have resources for winter cropping.

He intends to be a big farmer in his area and own a big business to grow rich.

This loan is special because:

It helps increase the productivity and income of smallholder farmers in Malawi.
