A loan helped a member to buy a cow as well as corn.

Mujeres Del Porvenir Group's story

Thirty-three-year-old Aura shares that she had a third grade education and then began to do housework for five years. She married a man who works on a corn farm and also is a day laborer. The couple have five children who range in age from two to twelve. Four of them attend primary school. Aura began raising chickens eight years ago. She sells both eggs and chicks from her home located in a rural area in the department/state of San Marcos. With her first Kiva loan, Aura will buy a cow and corn.

Ten Maya Mam women including Aura have formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres del Porvenir” or “Women of the Future”. They all raise animals like pigs and cattle. They live remotely and it takes them one hour on a bus to reach the closest town. For that reason, they only leave their community one day each week. A Facilitator joins them at a monthly meeting and after they make loan payments, conducts an educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Topics are timely and can be about health, hygiene, nutrition, self-esteem, empowerment, or women’s issues, rights and roles or family matters. Effective business management practices are shared as well.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for giving a helping hand to Aura and her friends. They are determined to create more prosperous futures for themselves and their families!
