A loan helped my business Driftless Market sell your favorite frozen, local and organic foods.

Royal's story

Hello! My name is Royal.
In 2019, my sister, a long-time resident of Platteville, Wisconsin approached my husband Tony and I about the possibility of purchasing an organic grocery store in Platteville. At the time, I was working full-time for Target Corp in Minneapolis and Tony was managing a coffee shop.

After much consideration, we decided we were ready to leave the hustle and bustle of the Twin Cities and escape the rat race of Corporate America. So, we took our modest nest egg and went all-in to purchase Driftless Market, an organic grocery store. Officially taking ownership in February of 2020.

Now, had someone told me we would immediately be faced with a pandemic, I'm not sure I would have made the same decision, but nonetheless we were in it to win it.

After 4 hard but rewarding years, we have remained in business and become a true community hub -- so much more than just a grocery store. We have been recognized by the University of Wisconsin - Platteville as a Safe Space for LGBTQ+ individuals, for going above and beyond to welcome our community. Additionally, our store was named Friend of the Liberal Arts College in Platteville for our continued support of higher education and employing college students, while offering 10% off to any kind of student. Recently, I (Royal) was recognized for my efforts and volunteer work in the diversity and inclusion space by Mainstreet Wisconsin, a statewide organization.
