Ester is 42 years old. As a child, she learned about business from her parents. Over time, she was able to set up her own business and start selling traditional outfits in her community. She also sells delicious snacks as a street vendor to generate extra income.
Ester is a single mother who is currently raising six children over the age of 12. Even though she only has two years of education, she has been able to send her children to school. Her goal is to generate more income so that she can cover the household expenses. Ester will use her first Kiva loan to buy a variety of traditional clothes, as well as firewood and ingredients for preparing delicious snacks.
The Friendship Bridge Communal Bank “Xoljuyup” consists of seven women of Maya K’iche’ descent. They live in a rural area in the Department of Sololá. They are businesswomen who sell traditional clothes and snacks. The women have an average formal education of two years, so they benefit enormously from the monthly training seminars that are part of the Microcredit Plus program. Recent topics include savings, business development, and personal empowerment. Other topics covered include health, hygiene, nutrition, women’s issues, and family.
The members are very grateful to the Kiva lenders for their cordial support.
