A loan helped a latina-owned sustainable clothing brand in NY to hire a sewer, a recent refugee from Ecuador.

Cindy's story

As an immigrant hailing from a small town in Quevedo, Ecuador, I loved the warm tropical weather and the amazing food and fauna. There weren't many opportunities to advance in my dream of becoming a fashion designer, so I decided to move to the U.S. I faced incredible challenges when I arrived here all by myself at the age of 20. From culture shock moments to the harsh realities of life, I persevered. I graduated with honors in Fashion Design from Chicago and embarked on a journey to New York City, where I took on numerous unpaid internships. I worked in the industry for a decade, honing my skills at prestigious fashion houses like Coach, Parker New York, Derek Lam, Shoshanna and Parker New York. My designs graced the shelves of renowned retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue, Shopbop Bloomingdales, and Nordstrom.

My entrepreneurial spirit has always come from my parents. They were jewelry vendors and I remember always helping them sell at their store and they were always impressed with my selling techniques, because I would wear them and promote them by word of mouth, similar to what I do today when i get stopped in the street and people ask me what I’m wearing, I’m always proud to say “This is my brand, Cindy Castro New York”

Today, I'm the proud founder of Cindy Castro New York, a sustainable women's clothing brand that's all about driving environmental and social change. I have seen poverty first hand in my small town and I see it here in the U.S. I can relate with immigrants and refugees that come here to survive. My business is located in the heart of the garment district for a couple of years wholeheartedly dedicated to providing job opportunities locally in NYC, with more than 70% of our clothing proudly made by talented Latino immigrants and minorities in NY. By doing so, we empower these communities and contribute to their growth. We don’t use any polyesters or petroleum based fabrics in our clothing or packaging. All of our clothing is biodegradable, natural materials. Moreover, we give back by actively supporting organizations that uplift and champion women and children, a cause that holds a special place in my heart.

My dream is to become one of the pioneering Latinas leading the way in sustainable fashion, creating designs that not only look fabulous but are made ethically and responsibly.
