A loan helped a woman-owned start up snack company to purchase some of the equipment and ingredients needed.

Dora's story

Everyone wants to leave a legacy behind. My mother left me a legacy of hard work, integrity and resilience. I want to leave a legacy of a slightly different kind in the form of a delicious crispy ginger-flavoured snack called Khurma - a taste of the Caribbean.

I am a mother of six and a widow who has overcome many challenges in life. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago, and migrated to the US several decades ago in search of a better life for myself and my children. I love cooking for my church for all our special functions. But my main passion is making khurma, based on a Trinidadian delicacy and a recipe I have perfected over a period of 40 years. It is hugely popular with family and friends of all nationalities and from all walks of life. I come from an entrepreneurial family, partly by necessity, as we were not afforded the opportunity of a full education. I always dreamed that one day I may be able to turn my hobby into a business.

I am much older now and with the wisdom of the years and the support of my children I have embarked on this journey to create and sell khurma. I hope in the future to add other variations and other Trinidadian snacks. This not only helps me to fulfill a lifelong dream but also to leave a legacy for the next generation, bringing cultural awareness and celebrating our unique contributions. I have given samples of khurma to a few stores and I am delighted that, so far, 3 of them have placed orders. I am hopeful and excited for the future.
