A loan helped increase incomes for more than 180 small fruit farmers in Southern Peru.

Evergreen Agro's story

Small farmers in Southern Peru lack adequate technology and infrastructure to produce fruit with the quality demanded by international markets. This situation is compounded by the farmers' lack of associative structures, which results in them paying higher prices for their supplies and facing low negotiating power when they sell their crops.

Evergreen Agro (EGA) Farms is a vertically integrated social agribusiness that trains and supports small farmers to achieve higher incomes from producing pomegranates, avocados, and oranges. Specifically, EGA fostered the creation of a pomegranate producers association, brought in high-quality seeds from Israel, and trained farmers in crop management techniques. EGA installed a seedlings greenhouse, consolidated an agronomic support team, and built a packing house to facilitate the export of fruit to international markets. EGA Farms seeks to provide farmers with both an export-quality crop and long-term assets (fruit trees) that will allow them to have 20 years of stable cash flows.

EGA Farms supports ~180 farmers annually, improving their income levels and providing technical assistance to reduce carbon footprints and increase land productivity.

Kiva’s loan will enable EGA to install additional farmer support structures, improve cold storage, and acquire fruit protection bags. This is EGA Farms first loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.

This loan is special because:

It enables Peruvian pomegranate farmers to access markets for their produce.
