A loan helped a black woman-owned Taco Truck lease our second food truck and open a new location.

Crystal's story

After my college graduation, I had no clue what my path would look like. One of my colleagues got on working at Hertz Car Rental. I was hired a few weeks later. I started off as a Manager Trainee. I loved serving my team in that position. I lead them to many victories: top profit margin, top revenue, top ranked area, and many more. I promoted over 50+ plus employees during my 13 years at Hertz. On Valentine’s Day 2020, the company informed me I was being laid off. My current position as an Area Manager was removed. Although this change affected over 200 Area Managers, they didn’t want me to leave. I was offered 3 other positions within the company. I declined them all. I had been at Hertz for a long time and my time had expired and something greater was coming. It was still a very difficult process.

After I was laid off, COVID hit. I applied for so many jobs, and received so many “No’s”. I did a lot of cooking while in quarantine and would post on social media. I wasn’t getting any job offers, so I just did what I love, cook! I started hosting virtual cooking classes once a week with 10-15 participants weekly. One day, I watched a TikTok on Birria tacos, and I decided to make them. I loved them so much that I offered it as one of my cooking class options. One of my close friends recommended I sell them because they were that good. I started off cooking these tacos and selling them out of my apartment. A few months later, I designed and purchased my first food truck, and I'm proud to say the business is flourishing so much that I have paid it off!
