A loan helped my business, Fuchsia Shoes fund the production of 1,000 artisanal shoes.

Afshan's story

It all started on a stroll through a farmer’s market in my hometown in Pakistan. Among the bazaar’s endless maze of stalls, a row of colorful hand-made sandals caught my eye.

I brought dozens of these lovely “khussa”s as souvenirs for my co-workers at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. They loved the shoes to bits! But when they wanted more, I had no idea where to point them to buy sandals of such beauty.

Personally, I’ve never been a fan of the boring flats made by some of our favorite shoe brands. It was difficult to find a unique and comfortable pair that is only made for me. Even the higher price tag from luxury brands did not guarantee comfort.

I set out to solve a personal problem I had. One I share with millions of women. I didn’t grow up dreaming to start a footwear brand. But in 2016, I quit my engineering job at Microsoft and began developing my idea: unique, comfortable, artisan-crafted footwear for everyone.

Today, Fuchsias are not mass produced in factories. Each pair is lovingly made by more than 72 passionate South Asian artisans, who earn dignified incomes through their craft.

Now I want to bring Fuchsias to shelves everywhere, so our customers can also experience the joy in finding a high quality, one-of-a-kind shoe made just for them.
