Many of the women who participate in Friendship Bridge's Microcrédito Plus program of loans, education, and medical attention have seen and supported their parents with their businesses. When they grow up, they have an idea of what is needed to operate their own businesses.
That is what happened with Marcelina, twenty-one-years-old and single. She shared, "When I was a girl, I saw and learned to use the wooden loom to make lovely cortes, also known as traditional skirts. I observed, learned, and was only able to go to school for six years." Marcelina currently has had the business for six years. Weekly, she makes deliveries of three cortes to the town in her locality. The work is very tedious and detailed. She needs her first Kiva loan to purchase a large quantity of thread and, so, to increase the business's inventory.
There are six Maya K'iche women in the Friendship Bridge communal bank Rio Jordan. They live in a rural zone in the department/state of Quiche. The women in the group participate in monthly educational trainings about health, women, family, and business. Every two months, the women have access to basic health services in the Salud para la Vida [Health for Life] program. This is one of the "Plus" which they have as a benefit in the Microcrédito Plus program (microloans, education, health). It works!!
Thank you!!
