A loan helped to buy more oil, vita, bags of salt, bags of rice, bath soap and other items to sell.

Irene's story

This is 54-year-old Irene. She lives with her partner and has two children. Irene attended school up to eleventh grade. She deals in a business selling oil, vita, bags of salt, bags of rice, bath soap and other items. She sells Monday through Saturday from 6:00 am up to 5:00 pm. She started the business with her own savings and learned how to sell from her sister-in-law. She uses a car or motorcycle to transport supplies to her business site.

Irene applied for a loan through BRAC Liberia, a Kiva lending partner. The loan will be used to buy more oil, vita, bags of salt, bags of rice, bath soap and other items to sell to her good clients. She is proud of her business because it makes her an independent woman. She wants to own a bigger business in the future. Irene wishes to say thanks.

This loan is special because:

It serves low-income individuals in rural Liberia where few alternative funding sources exist.
