Isaura Olinda is 63 years old, widowed, and has five grown children who are independent. She lives in her own home in the lowlands of Montecristi, a place known for its handicrafts made from straw, wicker, piquigua [a natural fiber from Ecuador], and wood. This area is known around the world for its Panama hats.

Isaura Olinda has some chicken coops on the patio of her house. She sells the birds when they are large and reach a good weight. Her customers are merchants who arrive at her house to buy live chickens. She also sells eggs.
