A loan helped to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt and maize flour.

Shanita's story

Shanita is 30 years old and lives in the town of Gayaza in the Gayaza region of Uganda. She is married and has two children with one of them currently in school. For the past 7 years, Shanita has been working hard to manage her retail shop, where she sells general merchandise items like sugar, salt, cooking oil and water.

To help expand her business, Shanita has requested a loan of 3,500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt and maize flour to sell. This will help Shanita to generate greater profits and manage to provide enough food for her family.

Shanita hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her business into a wholesale shop.

Shanita is a member of BRAC's microfinance program (MF). The program primarily serves small group members like Shanita who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
