A loan helped to buy raw materials for her handcrafted wares.

Milika's story

Milika's passion for handicraft was fueled by her late mother, who used to teach her how to weave mats, make garlands, fans and other traditional Fijian artifacts that she used to sell when Milika and her siblings were little.

Now Milika has resorted back to the business that her mother used to run so she can provide for her family. Her husband used to be a taxi driver and the sole breadwinner for their family until he passed away earlier this year.

The adamant mother of five has managed to secure a stall at her local handicraft center where she sells little things like fans and small mats. This has helped put food on the table for her family.

She wishes to expand her business and sell other handicrafts such as shell necklaces, larger Fijian mats, woven women's handbags, tapa, house ornaments made from coconut shells, and traditional Fijian dance attire, but she would require the resources to be able to make them.

For these she would need to purchase shells, pandanus leaves, assorted colored wools, plain tapa, varnish and possibly a sewing machine.
