A loan helped to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt, soft drinks and maize.

Janat's story

Janat is 33 years old and lives in the town of Kabuusu in the Makindye region of Uganda. She is married and has 3 children who are all currently in school. For the past 8 years, Janat has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells general merchandise such as sugar, salt, cooking oil and water.

To help expand her business, Janat has requested a loan of 1,700,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt, soft drinks and maize flour to sell at her convenience store, and will help Janat to generate greater profits and help her husband to pay school fees for her children and buy food for her family too. Janat hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land and build rental houses.

Janat is a member of BRAC's Microfinance program (MF). The program primarily serves small Group members like Janat who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
