A loan helped a member to buy more animals and feed.

Senoras Famosas Group's story

Petronila, 24, is an enterprising woman who visualized herself as a successful businesswoman at a young age. She has five years of education, and she lives with her husband and one 7-year-old child. Two years ago, she opened her business raising animals (chickens and pigs) that is expanding to two markets near her house. In addition to the agricultural business, she is also a talented weaver.

Her clients are requesting more animals. She wants her clientele to be satisfied, and that is why she is applying for her second Kiva loan. With this capital, Petronila will have the opportunity to invest capital in the business and she will buy more animals and feed.

Petronila, along with 9 women, make up the “Señoras Famosas” Friendship Bridge Communal Bank in the department/state of Quiché. All of the women in the group speak K’iche as their native language. They have businesses raising farm animals (pigs, chickens, turkeys). Others make beautiful textiles. The women meet monthly to make loan payments. Afterwards, they participate in an interactive educational training that is essential for their success, as they have little or no formal education. The subjects range from health, nutrition, and hygiene to women's and family issues. They also cover effective business management practices, such as planning, budget preparation, and savings.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for getting to know these women.
