A loan helped a member to buy fabric and rhinestones.

Estrellas De Belen Group's story

Styles and colors of Maya traditional colorful textiles have changed throughout the years. New textiles feature metallic threads and sparkling rhinestones. Some say that the women look like walking works of art!

Twenty-four-year-old Heydy, the mother of an 8-year-old daughter who attends the first grade, began fabricating beautiful traditional blouses/”huipiles” and aprons/”delantales” when she was a child 10 years before she married. She sells in local markets and also takes custom orders. Her income, together with that of her husband, who sells modern clothing, helps cover household expenses and the education of their daughter. Two family members help her with the business. With her second Kiva loan Heydy will buy more traditional fabrics and rhinestones. Her goal is to enlarge the business and attract more customers.

Heydy was fortunate to attend school for 9 years and continues to learn in the monthly meetings of her Friendship Bridge Trust Bank called “Estrella de Belen”. She has joined seven other Maya K’iche women who all live in the department/state of Totonicapan. The monthly educational training, designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games, gives them useful information drawn from four areas: health, family, women, and business. Often they share what they learn with family members and friends.

Thank you, Kiva investors for giving Heydy and her friends a helping hand!
