Las Rosas De Pulay 1 Group's story

Elena is 68 years old; she has 6 children. Her mother died when she was 3 years old. Her father raised her, she did not go to school and is the only daughter. Since she was a child, she had worked with her father in farms located at Guatemalan south coast.

She got married when she was 16. She weaved to get an income, while her husband was a laborer and worked on different farms.

She learned about the Chajulense Association of Women United for Life from a friend, so then she began in the Waving Project that is part of the Chajulense. She began forming groups of women interested in assessing credits in her community. This year she will get her 11th credit.

With her first two credits, she started a small grocery store. With her third credit, she and her husband began a cable TV business activity, which they began with a small group of customers. Since then they have been expanding the number of customers.

This year she will invest the credit to expand and give maintenance to the cable station.

Elena is the leader of group Las Rosas de Pulay 1, the group is integrated by 4 women, all from the Ixil Maya ethnicity. The group will invest their loan in textile 75%, and services 25%. On average, each member of the group has 3 children, the average age of the members of the group is 38 years old. 25% are illiterate, 25% did not concluded their primary education, 25% concluded their primary education and ended their secondary education.
