A loan helped to gain access to cost-efficient hybrid seeds and fertilizer for her crop cultivation and to earn profits from her farm to improve her life.

Sheila's story

Popularly known as "the breadbasket of Kenya" because of large farms in the area, Eldoret has a beautiful landscape. Kiva lenders, meet Sheila, who hails from Eldoret, which is home to one of the poorest neighborhoods in Kenya.

Sheila, born in 1993 and a mom of two school-aged children, is arguably among the most successful clients of Juhudi Kilimo, a microfinance institution that deals only with smallholder farmers in rural parts of Kenya. Sheila is married to a fellow farmer. Her family's main income source is milk from their dairy farm, but they are also involved in other agricultural activities such as growing corn.

The biggest problem that farmers from her village face is a huge deficit in terms of access to agricultural inputs, meaning that farmers' yields and incomes are far below what they could be. Juhudi Kilimo partnered with Kiva to provide financial services to smallholders around Kenya.

Sheila is requesting a loan to buy farm inputs such as seeds, fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides. Your loan will enable her to improve her production through the use of quality farm inputs. This intervention will help her meet the increasing demand for food in the marketplace and, in the process, generate more income to repay the loan and improve her family's quality of life. Sheila also hopes to improve the condition of her house.
