A loan helped a member to buy seeds, fertilizer and insecticides.

Las Vecinas Group's story

Forty-four-year-old Isabel works as a teacher in a local school and understands the importance of an education. She has been the sole provider for three children (14-21) since she was widowed several years ago. Her oldest son attends university studying to be a lawyer, her middle son is in high school studying to be a kindergarten teacher and the youngest is in the eighth grade. Isabel also farms corn, beans and flowers on a plot of land. She has three employees and is able to harvest her crops three times yearly. Her goal is to expand the farm. She is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy seeds, fertilizer and insecticide.

The Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, a monthly educational training and bi-monthly health care services is quite useful for Isabel and seven other women who live in the department/state of Quiche. Their Trust Bank is called “Las Vecinas” or “The Neighbors”. Learning about effective business management practices, one of the topics for the monthly educational training, helps them with their businesses selling artisan sweet confections and clothing and flower/vegetable farms. Other topics are about health, women’s issues and family matters. Since the health care system in Guatemala is stretched thin, they appreciate visiting with a traveling nurse who offers all kinds of consults, services, exams and family planning.

Thank you, Kiva investors for learning about Isabel and her friends and funding their much appreciated loans!
