Gabo's story

Hello, my name is Gabriel. I am Puerto Rican and the owner of Deer Coffee. About 10 years ago I began specializing in the vast world of coffee making, that wonderful world where every day is more fascinating. With the constant support of my parents, in 2015 I began the journey of starting my own business serving what I love most in life CAFÉ.

It was 2 years of a lot of sacrifices that made our coffee shop known and that made me smile every day. I cherished seeing how people came from different places to try and learn about coffee, being a very talkative barista, I loved talking with customers and seeing their faces light up enjoying the flavors and aromas in their cups of coffee.

Subsequently, the impact of Hurricane Maria in September 2017 came destroying everything in its path. I have to admit it was hard for the business, everything began to fall apart and we did not have any help to cover the expenses and losses, but we did not give up and instead went out to the streets to sell that coffee that Puerto Ricans drink with so much pleasure.

December came, and there was still no electricity. This situation affected my personal life, my mother depended on electricity to be able to dialyze daily at home due to her kidney disease. The problem of the lack of electricity was so immense that my mother, unable to turn on her dialysis machine, lost her life in December 2017. The world fell on me, I did not understand why it happened and how this would affect me so much. One quiet morning preparing coffee for the locals in my area, I remembered all the support my mother gave me, which reaffirmed my motivation to continue.
