Ana is a 26-year-old single woman who lives with her parents in a rural area in the state of Totonicapan, Guatemala. She has had education up to 6th grade. From the past eight years, she has been sewing canvas pants. She can deliver 150 pairs of pants in a month. She is requesting her third loan from Kiva to buy an industrial sewing machine, so that she can expand her business, hire employees, who in turn, can help support their own families.
Ana has gathered seven other Maya K’iche women to form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Amor de Dios” or “Love of God”. The majority of these ladies are talented seamstresses who also sew pants. Others resell t-shirts in a huge market in the textile town of San Francisco El Alto. They look forward to their monthly meetings when they catch up with each other, make loan payments, and participate in an educational training. The training is essential to their success as women and entrepreneurs because they usually have had only a few years of formal education. They learn about health, nutrition, hygiene, and how to take care of themselves during the pandemic. They also acquire effective business management practices like budgeting, planning, and savings. Ana and her group is thankful to Kiva investors, for partnering with Friendship Bridge to help her and other women in creating a brighter future!
