A loan helped to provide working capital to the entrepreneurial indigenous farmers of the community-owned bank.

El Peñon Community-Owned Bank's story

Welcome to El Peñon!

El Peñon is a small, rural, and remote indigenous community that is mostly made up of farmers in West Panama. The main products of this community are coffee and plantains.

The El Peñon Community-Owned Bank is a women-led financial institution that provides the members of this indigenous reservation with the ability to have savings, take out small loans, and have access to financial literacy. All the members of this group are financially excluded from more traditional financial institutions, but the Community Owned Bank provides these farmers with a chance at financial inclusion in their own community.

Today, they are applying for their first Kiva loan to access working capital to buy agricultural equipment, seeds, and machinery, creating jobs during the crucial coffee and plantains planting season in their native indigenous region.

Thank you for trusting and supporting indigenous farmers that have been historically excluded from basic financial services!

This loan is special because:

It helps the people of a historically disadvantaged community access financial services.
