A loan helped this woman-owned business, working to help others, make the leap to becoming an employer.

Mary's story

I am the owner of a gift shop here in Maine specializing in handmade, local goods. I grew up at the feet of my mother's sewing machine. I was always in awe of her talents. Through the years I tried a hundred different crafts. When I found soap, I knew this was what I was meant to create. I love making soap and have operated my soap company for years.

I have always wanted to own my own business and I love being a micro business. What running my own business means to me has changed over the years. I am not only an entrepreneur and artisan but a mom. That includes being a mom to a child with autism. When they were young entrepreneurship meant more flexibility and more time with them when it mattered.

The older my children get the more I become aware of my son's needs for adulthood. As he gets older and moves into his teen years, I am more anxious than ever about what the looming future holds for him. Will he have meaningful employment? Will he have a place in our community where he is safe, loved, and appreciated? Will he see people every day and be part of our community?

My entrepreneurial spirit, love of soapmaking, and longing to create a place in our community for my son have culminated in Maine Micro Artisans. It's the perfect answer to everything.
