A loan helped to buy equipment & supplies to start my business of bringing "Aloha" to people in my cooking.

Po's story

As a young Hawaiian boy at 7 years old, my parents divorced, and as a result life became a lot harder for my mom, brothers, and myself. It eventually led to my mom being unable to support us. Sometimes I had to skip meals. We crabbed and fished at times to survive. We even collected shells at the beach to make leis so my mom, brothers, and I could sell them on the side of the road to buy rice and soy sauce. After my brothers became adults and moved on with their lives, my mom and I had to move to California. When she could no longer take care of me, I was left with family. That eventually ended. I became homeless for a period of time. During High School, I would watch kids eating school lunches. I would wait until they went to class, then eat out of the trash cans. I had no choice because I was so hungry. No one should ever have to do that, but you do what you need to survive. I remember thinking no one should ever have to go through this. I told myself when I get older, I would learn how to cook and make sure not to feel this type of hunger again. Not having real support or the bare essentials of life as a kid was very tough.

The challenges in my youth ignited a desire in me to learn how to cook and enjoy creating dishes. I wanted to create wonderful experiences for anyone to enjoy. It brings me so much joy to cook for family, friends, co-workers, or anyone I come across that was less fortunate and hungry. I am passionate about putting love into every dish. To love people through it, share a smile, a warm greeting, and witness the positive impact on them is always my goal. Sharing “Aloha” in the world. My young life was hard. However, being able to use those trials by turning it around for good is what it’s about.

To achieve this lifelong dream is truly priceless.
