Glaris's story

Glaris is a 58-year-old widow with a third-grade education. She is starting her sixth loan cycle with the Namaste Creating Prosperity Program. She has four grown children. She lives in El Tejar, Chimaltenango, Guatemala.

Her business is selling peanuts and tostadas She makes the tostadas from special corn and bags them for sale. She sells these to individual customers and to stores and businesses that distribute them to other markets. Their unique flavor makes them very popular. She buys peanuts in bulk and sells them in small bags. During the previous five loan cycles, she learned about customer service, tracking her sales and expenses, and maintaining the quality of her products.

She will use her loan to buy peanuts in bulk, special corn for the tortillas, bags for the tostadas and peanuts, and to pay the mill for grinding the corn. Her business goals are to have her business name on all her products and eventually to have a vehicle that she can use for deliveries.

When she started with Namaste, her monthly net profit was GTQ 3,200 ($416). Her current net profit is GTQ 3,800 ($494), and she hopes to increase that to QTQ 4,450 ($578) by the end of this loan cycle. Her business growth has been slow because of the pandemic and because of some health problems that prevented her from working during a couple of cycles.
