A loan helped a woman-owned business get off the ground by funding a greenhouse and other supplies.

Elizabeth's story

I grew up gardening alongside my mother, Ruth, whose own love of plants fed my passion for growing things. My mom worked at a small plant nursery that was known for growing seedlings using organic practices, and she would bring home extra plants that she'd rescued from the compost for us to plant. I poured over her seed box for things to plant and would spend hours looking at nursery catalogs and writing lists of what I wanted to grow on my own farm someday. Occasionally, she would bring me to work during school vacation, and I truly thought the greenhouses in early spring were the most magical places in the world.

I graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2017 with a BS in Sustainable Food and Farming. Fully intending to become a small-scale organic farmer someday, I took a "temporary" position at another small, organically grown seedling nursery, and five years later I am still there, managing their greenhouses. There, I learned everything from plant names to proper watering techniques to pest identification. Working there led me to realize how much I wanted to start my own nursery, where I could empower others to grow their own food and flowers.

I am so excited for the next chapter when I open Solid Ground Gardens to the public next spring. I am also lucky to have such a supportive local community around me who values healthy seedlings that are organically grown. It is so rewarding to nerd out about plants with people who are just as thrilled as I am about getting our hands dirty.
