Olga, age 29, is a Maya-Kiche woman from the high plains of Guatemala. Coming from a large family, with eight siblings, she only attended school up to sixth grade. Her parents were merchants and sold clothing that was traditional in her community. Now she is married and has a child, age 6 years, who is in first grade.
Three years ago, Olga began her weaving business, making "cortes" [traditional skirts] and "huipiles" [traditional embroidered blouses]. She wants to give her child a better future, and so she strives so much to be able to have extra income. To be able to fill orders from her customers. Olga employs two people from her community.
To be able to inject capital into her business, Olga has come to the Kiva lenders to request her first individual loan. She plans to invest the funds in the purchase of the best quality of yarn in bulk for weaving, to be able to increase her production. Olga wants the business to grow more, to be able to employ more people.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for supporting the development of the young women of Guatemala. With more opportunities, surely the next generations in Guatemala will be able to develop better.
