A loan helped helps provide solar electricity to over 3,000 households in rural Kenya and create 60+ new jobs.

Deevabits Green Energy's story

Approximately 70% of rural Kenyan households rely on kerosene for lighting. They spend 30% of their annual income on expensive and inefficient sources of lighting. Kerosene emits harmful fumes that endanger people's health and is hazardous for the environment.

Deevabits Green Energy distributes off-grid solar technology to underserved rural communities across Kenya. Their solar products produce 15 times more illumination than kerosene. Deevabits last-mile distribution to the lowest-income brackets also empowers youth and women with jobs. Customers pay in cash or on a pay-as-you-go flexible payment plan that removes the upfront barrier cost.

Deevabits has distributed more than 23,000 affordable solar lighting solutions impacting 120,000 people in rural areas and replacing 19,000 kerosene lanterns. Households using solar lamps save 15-30% and double the number of hours children study at night. They’ve created more than 350 jobs in rural Kenya.

Kiva’s loan will help Deevabits procure and distribute life-changing solar products to over 3,000 households, the majority living on a daily income of $5. This loan will bridge the gap in cashflows that exists between paying suppliers and receiving cash from customers on a pay-as-you-go basis. This is Deevabits’ third loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program. View their previous loans here and here.
