Ang, the middle-aged ethnic lady standing from the outer right of the picture, is the leader of Thanh An 81 Group. She is 60 years old. Many years ago, her husband passed away and she has become the main breadwinner of the family. Despite working hard in cultivation and livestock, her family still has difficulty and has been recognized as a near-poor household by the local government. There are only two people in her family including herself and her son. They are now living in a traditional brick house in Dien Bien Province, the northwest mountain of Vietnam where agricultural activity gives the main source of income. She finds it extremely difficult to to pay living costs and monthly bills.
She would like to expand the scale of her raising fish business with an existing farm covering an area of 1,000 square meters, but the main hardship is lack of capital. Luckily, she has chance to borrow a loan from the Anh Chi Em program. She would use this loan to buy additional fishes as well as make value-added services. The profit from this investment will be mainly used to pay daily expenses with the remaining money to repair their old house.
She said the family is most likely to escape the cycle of poverty if a drastic change is made.
Thank you so much to the tremendous support from Kiva lenders.
