A loan helped a member to buy fabric, thread, decor and sweaters.

Ninfa Group's story

Many Guatemalan women need to have more than one business to earn income and buy basic items for their households. Juana, a 25-year-old married woman with a sixth grade education, is the mother of two sons five and six. Her oldest son is in kindergarten and the younger one stays home. Her husband could not find work in Guatemala so he went to the United States several years ago in order to help support the family.

Juana started her traditional textile business seven years ago and sells sweaters as well. She works from home taking custom orders and dreams of having her own locale. Juana is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy fabric, thread, decor, as well as sweaters.

Juana has joined seven Maya K’iche women to participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and basic health care services. Their Trust Bank is called “Ninfa”. They live in a rural area in the department/state of Solola and have convenience stores, traditional and modern textile businesses and raise poultry. Others have personal care businesses.

They look forward to their monthly meetings, make loan payments and participate in an educational training. Topics are relevant to their lives and drawn from four areas: business, health, family, and women. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for learning about Juana and her friends and funding their much needed loans. You are much appreciated!
