A loan helped to buy farm inputs such as quality certified seeds and fertilizer, to improve her harvest and support her family.

Mary's story

A positive attitude and confidence are key qualities that propel Mary, a 36-year-old, ever-smiling mom in her day-to-day farming activities. She is a smallholder farmer who has combined her efforts, talents, insights, enthusiasm, and inspiration to work together. She is full of dreams and aspirations for her life. She resides in a remote village in the lush hills of Embu, Kenya.

Mary is a crop farmer, who injects passion and enthusiasm in her work. The biggest problem that farmers from her village face is the huge deficit in access to agricultural inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, which means that their yields and incomes are far below what they could be.

Juhudi Kilimo has partnered with Kiva to provide financial services to smallholders around Kenya. Through these financial services, farmers from Embu, like Mary, can now buy productive assets and important agricultural inputs for use on their farms.

Mary is requesting a loan to buy farm inputs such as quality certified seeds and fertilizer. Her loan will enable her to improve production through the use of quality farm inputs. This intervention will help Mary fill the increasing demand for food in the market, and in the process, generate more income to repay her loan debt and improve the quality of life for her family.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
