A loan helped a Black women-owned business established in 1987 buy materials and pay overhead to expand and grow.

Kamari's story

I am the daughter of the founder, Angela. My mom always had an interest in baking and while growing up in Barbados she learned how to bake from her mother, Barbara. She started to measure everything and would practice making cakes for family and friends. Angela immigrated to the United States in 1972, got married, and had two children. Her first son, my brother Jamal, had down's syndrome, and I was born 15 months later. Angela tells the story about going to bed for three straight nights asking God the question "what is my purpose" and for three straight mornings "cake" came up as the answer. In August 1987 my mom incorporated Caribbean Cake Connoisseurs (now d/b/a The Black Cake Company) and the mail-order Caribbean cake company was born! She decided her business would be to make available her sought-after Black Cake and have a mail-order company so people across the North American region could have this delectable dessert shipped directly to them. Customers would purchase cakes year after year and we went online in 2006 with www.rumcake.com and www.blackcake.com.

In 2022 I, a trained attorney and legal recruiter of 20 years, left the law world and joined the family business! It has been more than a hobby and together my Mom and I are committed to growing The Black Cake Company to the size where there are many employees and we have the opportunity to impact the lives of people in our community. I want to demonstrate to my three sons what my mom showed me in building a business over 35 years - purpose, passion, and perseverance.
