A loan helped to buy more fresh varieties of food, like maize flour, and a fridge.

Ritah's story

Ritah is 32 years old and lives in the town of Kalerwe in the Kawempe region of Uganda. She is married and has one child who is currently in school. For the past five years, Ritah has been working hard to manage her restaurant, which sells cooked food and soft drinks.

To help expand her business, Ritah has requested a loan of 1,000,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more fresh varieties of food, like maize flour, and a fridge to start selling cold drinks at the restaurant. This will help Ritah to generate greater profits and improve her family standards of living by providing them with enough food and also buying some basic needs for her family. Ritah hopes that in the future she will be able to own a garbage business.

Ritah is a member of BRAC's Microfinance Program (MF). The program primarily serves small group members like Ritah who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.

This loan is special because:

It provides financial services in some of the poorest parts of Uganda.
