A loan helped buy a sign for a historical B&B, mansion one of the first Black doctors, to brand & increase sells.

Doris's story

I have always wanted to be a manager or owner of a bed and breakfast. After earning a Master of Business from Oklahoma City University, I searched for a place where I could earn a living by being hospitable to others. On my daily drive to work, I passed a three-story red stone mansion on a hill which was a bed and breakfast. I was very drawn to the property. When I noticed it was up for sale I informed my husband, Marq, and we inquired. We purchased the bed and breakfast as an early retirement transition for me. It took a lot of sweat equity and a cash injection to revitalize the home to reflect my vision of transforming the historical home into a place of restoration and relaxation.

The property was the home of one of Oklahoma's first Black doctors, Dr. Wyatt H. Slaughter. As I researched the doctor’s and his spouse's history, I found the Slaughter's lives paralleled my life. The family demonstrated care for others by opening their home. They held parties for holidays and summer cookouts for the community. Elders in the community who visit The Mansion today recall their experiences of community gatherings and speak of how the family gave shelter and solace at their mansion.

For many years, I have opened our home to friends, family, and acquaintances, offering hospitality, lodging, and meals. I am thrilled to own The Mansion Bed and Breakfast, where my passion meets my skills, serving and caring for people. I proudly continue the legacy of Slaughter’s Mansion while building a viable bed and breakfast business.
