A loan helped to buy supplies and yarn to jumpstart his weaving business and increase his income potential.

Wanchai's story

Wanchai lives in an isolated village in Northern Thailand with his wife and three young children. He is determined to give each of his children as many opportunities in life as he possibly can.

The vast majority of people in this region rely on slash-and-burn agriculture. Both Wanchai and his wife farm for a living, growing rice for personal consumption and corn for the wider market.

Wanchai and his wife also each have an unquenchable entrepreneurial spirit about them. Not content to let things befall them as they might, they were both quick to set their eyes on hammock weaving as a source of steady income. They learned to weave hammocks at the same time, something that was unusual. Wanchai fully expected to take some flak for doing the same kind of work as his wife did, but he found that many of his peers admired his determination. The additional income his family had was probably a factor in their evaluation, too!

Starting his own hammock weaving business was always on Wanchai's mind. Since he already had a bank account in his own name and his wife didn't, they decided that if they qualified, their Kiva loan would be in his name.

Wanchai and his wife are ready to see some big changes in their financial situation, changes that they are sure will have a positive impact on their children!

This loan is special because:

It creates employment opportunities for vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas.
