I was born and raised in a small Amish community in rural Tennessee. I gained a wealth of knowledge and skills during this time. I still use and cherish the skills I learned such as gardening, animal husbandry, and sewing. I have experienced many things in my life including homelessness, food insecurity, and poverty all before the age of 16. All of which were key factors in inspiring me to start this business. Despite learning disabilities, no generational wealth, and imposter syndrome I would go on to graduate high school and become an entrepreneur.
My partner Kevin was born in Brooklyn and spent his early childhood in Everette, Washington. Surrounded by the wild nature of the Pacific Northwest. He had a background in business and management and no experience with gardening or farming. Despite that, his love of working with his hands fueled his passion for creating his own career path. We knew in early 2019 that we wanted to make a big change from our office jobs and we set out to gain the time, knowledge, and experience to start this business.
We spent much of 2020 working on an organic family farm for the first summer of the pandemic. Honing our skills, knowledge, and business plan. Preparing for our next big step and in December 2020, our LLC, Desco Collective was formed. We started this business out of a family member's garage, the same garage we have lived in for the past year while getting our business off the ground. In our first year in business, we were able to triple our original investment of $2,000, ending our first year at just over the $6000 mark. In 2021 we built a community around our brand at farmers' markets and we are looking forward to continuing to grow.

When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.

"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation

Business Description
We are a start-up focused on sustainability and improving the quality of life for community members and low-income residents of central Ohio. We are acutely aware of the challenges individuals in low-income areas are faced with. We want to be part of the solution and change for the lack of quality food and the education available to these communities. We want to help people gain the knowledge for growing and preparing their own food. We currently produce affordable eco-friendly products aimed at reducing paper and plastic waste that we sell online from our website descocollective.com and at local farmers' markets. More often than not eco-friendly products are prohibitively priced and we are changing that one sale at a time. Our plans include creating a 6000+ sq ft garden and educational space where we can grow these foods and allow students to be hands-on. We decided at the end of 2019 to embark on our entrepreneurial journey and wanted to create a positive impact on the environment and in 2020 we officially formed our LLC. I wanted to start this business because I grew up often going hungry and at one time becoming homeless when I was only 9 and 10 years old. I know that many youth and families are still experiencing these same kinds of effects of poverty and I am determined to be a part of changing that for the better.
What is the purpose of this loan?
This loan would fund the building materials, seeds, soil, watering system, briefcase solar panels, and educational materials for our classes. It would also help us expand to more markets in the coming market season and help us build a bigger inventory of products. The garden will produce not only food, but native cut flowers, and ingredients for many of our products.
This loan will help facilitate several classes and events that we plan to start offering in 2022 & 2023 including gardening classes, community dinners, cooking classes, garden therapy, children's ecology classes, and event rentals. We are happy to say we have enlisted the help of Dei Dill. They are long-time educators, chefs, social justice advocates, and growers knowledgeable in organic agriculture, community gardens, and youth programs who will be teaching classes at our garden and this loan would go towards paying them for their time. The classes will operate on a sliding scale/free basis ensuring all of our customers have the opportunity to participate.
Although we will be offering the gardening and cooking classes for free/sliding scale those who complete the free courses will then have the opportunity to continue working with us with the purchase of a membership to Desco Gardens, a consultation service. This would operate off a monthly membership fee and give our customers more structure and confidence in growing their own food. We would be providing services such as garden wellness checks, accountability partners, planting & harvesting calendars, landscaping, garden planning, and composting.

Funding model
Every loan has only 30 days to fundraise on Kiva. There are 2 different options for how that funding is sent to the field:
Fixed: the total loan amount must be raised in order for funds to be sent to the Lending Partner. If the loan is not funded in full within the fundraising period, the loan will expire and any funds raised will be returned to lenders' Kiva accounts.
Flexible: any funds raised within 30 days will be passed along to the Lending Partner facilitating the loan and they will come up with other sources of funding to cover the rest of the loan amount.
What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.

Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.

How are loans facilitated?
Kiva loans are facilitated through 2 models, partner and direct, that enable us to reach the greatest number of people around the world.
For partner loans, borrowers apply to a local Lending Partner, which manages the loan on the ground. Lending Partners are responsible for screening borrowers, disbursing loans, posting borrowers to the Kiva website for funding, collecting repayments and otherwise administering Kiva loans on the ground to borrowers.
For direct loans, borrowers apply through the Kiva website and may or may not be endorsed by a Trustee. Unlike Lending Partners, Trustees don't handle any financial transactions or have any duty to repay loans on behalf of their borrowers. Instead, Trustees take the role of providing support and business advice to their borrowers throughout the term of the loan.

Lending Partners often work with borrowers over time to help them build credit and expand their businesses. In order to make it easier for partners to post loans for borrowers who have been listed on Kiva before, we allow some partners the ability to relist a loan without having to re-enter all of the borrower's information. When this occurs, you'll see an updated loan description, as well as excerpts of the original descriptions from an earlier loan.
Most borrowers take out loans consecutively, meaning that they receive a second loan after having repaid the first. However, sometimes our Lending Partners give out concurrent loans, allowing borrowers to take out one primary loan and a secondary "add-on" loan along with it. These additional loans are typically smaller than the borrower's primary loan and serve a different purpose. We trust our partners to determine whether a borrower has the means to be able to repay a successive or concurrent loan.
