I came from very humble beginnings in Trinidad and Tobago before migrating to the UK and now the US. I have always had a strong passion for equality and justice. I remember as a 12 or 13-year-old walking out of an ethics class declaring that we were sitting around talking while children were starving - (it was during the Ethiopian famine). That prompted my teacher to set up our first food drive. Much later in 2007, I went to Mozambique, where I met a young girl called Anel who wanted to have an education but girls in her village were not allowed to go to school. Anel declared in Senna: Ndinadsawapanga school, which meant she would tell everyone about the power of education.
The villagers commissioned me to Ndinadsawapanga UK, USA, and the rest of the world. That experience gave birth to the I Will Tell International Film Festival which for 15 years has hosted screenings and discussions from more than 50 countries around the world celebrating untold stories that challenge our perspectives and catalyze change.
This year the festival expands to South Florida and, as part of the outreach to the public, we are hosting a series of living art exhibitions called My Big Story. We take an outdoor studio to art fairs and festivals and invite the public to share thoughts and stories with each other, on some of life's big issues: environment, relationships, race, faith, creativity, education, and more. The conversations are recorded and shared online to keep individuals and communities coming together to learn, share and grow together. These discussions are significant as they create a safe community space where people share profound experiences that create connection, help to break down the barriers between us, and also suggest solutions for the way forward.

The I Will Tell is an international film festival that has been celebrating untold stories that challenge our perspectives and catalyze change for the past 15 years. The festival premieres high-quality narrative features, feature documentaries, short films, and animation from over 50 countries around the world followed by post-screening discussions with filmmakers, thought leaders, and global icons. The issues include the environment, relationships, human trafficking, education race, faith, and much more.
We select the best films from hundreds of submissions each year. Emerging and established independent filmmakers get their work discovered and discussed while festival-goers get a chance to see and connect with unique and powerful films that would not usually be screened in mainstream cinemas. NGOs, Universities, and corporate sponsors get to showcase their work and connect with like-minded audiences.
We have hosted high-profile speakers such as Dame Sybil Phoenix, Raymond Santana (Central Park 5), Lily James (Cinderella). Lashana Lynch (007), Dr Otis Moss III and more.
We also have a highly esteemed jury panel of established filmmakers who judge the films and award the winners at an inspirational awards ceremony.
The post-screening discussions are one of the highlights of the festival. The stories shared are personal, practical, and powerful.
So in the run-up to the festival, My Big Story mobile outdoor studio aims to capture some of the I Will Tell experience by engaging ordinary people from all walks of life who are passionate about making the world a better place, to share their own stories, thoughts, and inspiration on a range of issues that affect the way we are and live.
My Big Story facilitates a space for these conversations to start and grow. The stories will be shared online with encouragement for others to comment and share.
What is the purpose of this loan?
We are new to the US, so although we have a wealth of experience of running the festival for 15 years we are still developing business relationships, sponsorships and audiences in Florida.
The loan will be used - to purchase equipment and materials for creating the mobile outdoor studio. This includes furniture, camera, sound and lighting equipment and - to cover the cost of running the outreach sessions at art festivals and fairs, editing the recordings, and sharing online.
Our ultimate goal would be to take My Big Story to different cities and States as well as to facilitate some online opportunities for those who are restricted from attending public events.
As well as the social impact, these conversations will also help us with our audience development and provide opportunities for sponsors to connect with the film festival.

What is the disbursed date?

Loan funds from Kiva lenders then go to backfill that amount and as a lender you assume the risk of the loan. If a partner loan is not pre-disbursed, it will be listed on Kiva with an expected "post-disbursed" date. What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
