A loan helped empower a small town ambitious farmer to feed her community by hiring an employee & buy a work truck.

Serena's story

I started this journey camping on my land while attending UHH, slowly building, planting, and pulling old trash from the land that the previous anthurium farmers had left behind. Initially, I planned to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and turmeric for self-sustainable reasons but when the 2018 lava eruption covered a large portion of Puna’s farms in lava I felt the inexplicable call to farm, the agricultural expenses in Hawaii are high and every day is a workday but I am happy and fulfilled in my tiny contribution to this communities healthy plate.

I first began growing tasty microgreens as a nutritious way to supply my own pantry with continually fresh, grown-off-the-ground, and easy to clean greens. When friends started asking for some of the nutritionally dense greens I built the first of two small greenhouses to accommodate the growing appetite for the vibrant vegetables. Today I grow and harvest continues to supply about 30 Pahoa families with weekly 1 pound boxes, several local restaurants as well as the DA BOX CSA program.

In 2022 I have agreed to work with the Kupu foundation in hiring part-time employees and training them in agriculture. A third large greenhouse will be built in anticipation of providing the Pahoa farmers market with no spray fresh veggies and microgreens. It is a daunting, exciting, rewarding, and hopefully profitable adventure.
