Santa, a 38 year old mother of 3 children (6-11) is a farmer growing tomatoes and raising chickens and pigs. Her husband is in the U.S. She participates in the Friendship Bridge Agricultural Credit and Training Program giving her technical training, business assistance and risk mitigation services. With her 1st Kiva loan, Santa can buy tomato plants, organic fertilizer and chickens.
Santa is one of 8 Maya K’iche women in the Trust Bank “Mujeres de Temala” in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. They are farmers, raise chickens and pigs and have convenience stores. Santos is the Treasurer of the group. Besides accessing loans, the “Microcredit Plus” program provides them with other “plus” services like monthly educational sessions (business, health, family, women) and essential bi-monthly basic health care services.
