My name is Maria, I’m an occupational therapist and mother of three girls. I am the second of eight siblings, and from a very young age I was able to practice my vocation of working with children. For seven years I have been working as an occupational therapist, looking for ways to help children with special needs on our Island.
As a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, I personally saw an increase in the need for these services in the western area of Puerto Rico. While working with many of these children, I witnessed firsthand the burden carried by their parents.
I decided to join another occupational therapist, Andrea, with whom I have been working for almost 4 years. We both share the same passion to facilitate the growth of our patients and their families. During our work together, we’ve seen a repeated logistical struggle: the parents of children with special needs must travel to multiple places to attend different therapies, to give their child the best possible outcomes. Our mission is to improve their routine by offering all the services in the same location.
Our goal is to expand our facilities to create a comfortable space to improve outcomes not only for our patients but for their entire families by improving accessibility and convenience.

Our business operates in the town of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. It is an integrated service center aimed to promote the optimal developmental and quality of life of children with special needs. We need to improve our facilities to offer our patients (participants) the variety of services they need under the same roof. These services include occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychological therapy, academic reinforcement, among others.
After practicing therapies independently for the past two years we decided to create "You & Me Development Center" in 2021 to help meet the high demand we discovered in the western part of the Island.
What is the purpose of this loan?
We decided to apply for a loan through this platform because we urgently need to move to a larger facility or make structural and equipment arrangements in order to provide more and better services. This loan will allow us to restructure the space and allow more providers to offer their service concurrently to benefit our current and future participants.

Flexible: any funds raised within 30 days will be passed along to the Lending Partner facilitating the loan and they will come up with other sources of funding to cover the rest of the loan amount.
What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
