A loan helped to pay for a bag of kava to stock up her kitchen and increase her income.

Sereana's story

Sereana Kwevira Huri lives on a village situated on the northern side of Efate island. The city of Vanuatu, Port Vila, is located on its southern side. Her village is large, and the main industry is agriculture. This industry is what locals have relied on as food and income, so for one to make a living off of it has been satisfactory despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sereana Kwevira Huri is 32 years of age and a mother of one daughter, 11 years old. She and her partner, a bus driver, live with her parents in her parents' house.

Sereana Kwevira Huri has asked for a loan to help her purchase a bag of kava, which will be stocked in her kitchen so she can produce certain kilos of kava juice for her customers in the evenings.

Kava is an intoxicating, non-fermented beverage native to the Pacific Islands. In Vanuatu, men traditionally drank kava on ceremonial occasions. Now, however, men and women drink kava on a casual basis. Sereana Kwevira Huri wants to make sure she has enough stock to satisfy her customers' demands.

Sereana Kwevira Huri will use her earned revenue to build her own house. SPBD - Vanuatu has supported her for over a year now, and this is her second loan. She faithfully repaid her first loan on time. Through her loans, Sereana Kwevira Huri feels empowered to expand her business to improve her family's living conditions.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
