A loan helped to buy pandanus for her weaving business.

Mele's story

Mele is 46 years old and a mother of four children. She is married to a mechanic, and they live in their own home with their children all attending school. Mele weaves taovala, a traditional mat wrapped around the waist, using white pandanus (a palm-like tree whose leaves are sliced into strips and used for weaving).

In the past, Mele’s husband was the family’s sole provider. But as Mele’s children grew, so did their needs, and her little family started to experience financial problems. So Mele sought help from her mother to learn weaving skills. Now she and her husband can manage to meet their family's needs without fail.

To continue in her business Mele has now applied for a loan to buy more pandanus for her weaving.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
