A loan helped to gain access to cost-efficient hybrid seeds and fertilizer for crop cultivation for this woman with a good credit history.

Stela's story

Meet Stela. She believes that, when smallholder farmers are given access to credit, they work harder. Stela is a smallholder farmer of both crops and livestock. For the past few years, she has been actively involved in farming and making great profits. Because of how much she likes farming, she has even nicknamed her cows. She is a very proud farmer, especially when she is milking them.

Unlike most microfinance institutions in Kenya that have imposed very complicated procedures in fund acquisition, thereby discouraging smallholder farmers, Juhudi Kilimo is working closely with Kiva to make loan acquisition for a smallholder farmer easy and convenient. Through this intervention, movement of funds in the rural communities has increased, thereby alleviating rural poverty.

Stela is requesting this loan to buy farm inputs, such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizer, to improve the quality of her crops. Modern farming requires the use of modern techniques. Using high-quality seeds will assure her an improved harvest, and hence, increased profit levels.

Stela's goals can be achieved through lenders’ help and goodwill. She believes that, with this loan, she will turn her family's lives around.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
