A loan helped to buy farming inputs, such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizers, to increase her output, meet demand, and improve her family's quality of life.

Maurine's story

Maurine is a 41-year-old mother of 2 school-going children. She is pictured in her simple house and is arguably one of the most successful Juhudi Kilimo clients. Juhudi Kilimo is a microfinance institution that deals only with smallholder farmers in rural parts of Kenya.

Maurine is married to a fellow farmer. Her family's main income source is crop farming, but they also do other activities, including growing maize.

Access to modern-quality farm inputs is the pillar of the agricultural revolution. However, in Kenya, a developing country, fertilizers and seed allocation by the government is way below the needs of farmers. Since Juhudi Kilimo, in partnership with Kiva, ventured into the affairs of smallholder farmers in Kenya, farmers attest that there has been a significant improvement of available inputs.

Maurine is requesting a loan to buy farm inputs such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizers.

Your loan will enable her to improve her production through their use, which will help her meet the increasing demand for food in the marketplace, generate more income to repay the loan, and improve her family's quality of life. She also hopes to improve the condition of her house.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
